Fabulous Felt I have been a feltmaker for over 20 years and I like to share this wonderful technique with you. Felt, a fabric made from wool or sometimes other animal hair, is the oldest fabric in the world and comes originally from Central Asia, where nomades used it for tents (yurts), clothing, carpets and so on. These days it is becoming well known as a craft, which is not surprising, because the possibilities are unlimited. There are 2 main felt making techniques: wet felting and dry needle felting. For wet felting, layers of wool are sprinkled with soapy water and through movement, such as rolling or rubbing, the wool 'sticks' together and becomes a fabric. You can see an example of wet felting here. Thin felt can be made by adding a very loose woven fabric inside the layers of wool, this is also called nuno felting. This is an excellent technique for warmer climates . For examples click here. Dry felting is done with a special barbed felting needle and the felting process happens by pushing the needle through the wool repeatedly, so that the top layer is pushed into the other layers and the wool hooks together. In my wall piece 'clefts' I have used wet and dry felting, take a look here. © 2007 Lizet Frijters © 2007 Lizet Frijters |
